DRS service

Direct Rail Services (DRS) is responsible for the  transport nuclear waste from UK nuclear power stations to Sellafield spent fuel reprocessing facility in Cumbria. 

DRS It is operated by Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS), part of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).

Used uranium and plutonium rods are carried in steel 'flasks' which weigh over 50 tonnes and can contain up to 2.5 tonnes of spent nuclear fuel.

Two routes for transport to BNF Sellafield run along the Tyne Valley;  from Torness Nuclear Power Station east of Edinburgh on the East Coast Main Line,  and from Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station. 

Tyne Valley 'Nuclear' Train Routes

Travelling along the Tyne Valley on the afternoon of 20th September 2021 was a 'Nuclear' Train from originating from Seaton o-t- Energy en route to Sellafield BNF, passing Wylam at 15:05. It consisted of a double header class 88 hauling a nuclear flask.
