It was built between 1725 and 1726 to carry the tracks of the Tanfield Wagonway.

The wagonway transported coal in horse drawn waggons from the inland collieries of County Durham to staithes at Redeugh, Gateshead, on the River Tyne. The coal was transported to South Shields in keels to be transferred to colliers for voyage to south east England.
