The preserved Flying Scotsman was restored as close as possible to it's configuration of it's LNER days. The smoke deflectors were removed, the double chimney was replaced by a single chimney, and a corridor tender was added. Flying Scotsman was repainted in LNER Green with the 4472 number.

Alan Pegler persuaded British Railways to run enthusiasts' specials over BR's main lines. As steam locomotives were being phased out, BR were removing watering facilities, consequently a second tender was added in September 1966.

On 1st May 1968 on the 40th anniversary of the first non-stop from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh Waverley, 4472 Flying Scotsman retraced it's journey of 1928 with a non stop run.
