The station opened on 2nd October 1876 and was operated by the London and South West Railway (L&SWR), which was absorbed in to the Southern Railway in 1923.

The station was rebuilt in 1937 when the route was electrified, but was destroyed during WW2. After the war it was rebuilt again.
