Edinburgh Waverley Station

In 1846, the North British Railway (NBR) Company built a station at the east of Nor Loch. The Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway (EGR), and the Edinburgh Leith and Newhaven Railway (EL&NR) also opened stations. The three companies combined their stations and renamed the station 'Waverley' after the novel of that name written by Sir Walter Scott.

By 1865, the North British had absorbed the EGR and the EL&NR and built a new station. The NBR built a new Waverley Station in the 1890's.

When British Rail was privatised in 1994, the station was placed in the ownership of Railtrack. The ownership changed again in 2002, when Railtrack ran into financial difficulties, and Network Rail assumed control of the railway infrastructure.
